“I know what it’s like to die on Merckx’s wheel. For kilometer after kilometer, I’ve had to ride behind him, half dead…in the 1971 Tour Of Belgium, Merckx had escaped with my brother Eric, for 120 kilometers he sat on his wheel. It was raining and freezing cold but Merckx kept on pounding away and beat him in the sprint. It was barbaric what that fellow did to us.”
